Just curious, does bridge plate material need to be quartersawn? I have some rock maple that I would like to use, rather than the E. Indian rosewood scraps from the back, but it's flatsawn.

.... or Rift sawn. Either is better, IMHO, than quarter sawn wood. The string ball ends appling pressure between the grain lines on quartersawn wood and can lead to cracks and or failure.

I'd think flat cuut would be more prone to cracking, and I've seen plenty of them that have. I like skew cut, myself.
